This shows us that if Eli had not taught him how to respond, God would not have done anything about it and probably would have left without speaking to Samuel. But Eli taught him what to do and how to respond to the voice, and when he responded the right way, God began to speak to him. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel.
